Two Hours (OR: *sob!*)
August 7th, 2008Sigh.
Two hours.
This is what bandwidth caps, using the internet and using Web 2.0 stuff has reduced my internet time to.
In the past two weeks, we’ve (or, since I’m officially the Flavelle internet scapegoat, I’ve) used up approximately 13GB+.
That’s about a gig a day.
This feels like it’s going to sever a lot of my social activities.
At least it’s two hours and not…zero, like apparently Mum wanted. I would hereby like to take this opportunity to reinstate my thinking of Mum as a complete cow.
Dad’s the one I should thank for hammering out this compromise. It’s not as much as I would love to have, but an hour in the morning to talk to great friend BowserJrLover, and collate stuff I want to look at offline, and an hour in the evening for whatever, is a lot better than nothing at all.
See, Mum is of the opinion that I should just stop using the internet and start having a life. But Dad had to say to her that the internet IS my life. And it is! I have a lot of good friends here, and I got cut off from them I don’t think I could handle it. The internet made me who I am today (and that could be either good or bad), not to mention I have a lot of projects I’ve promised for people on there, like G-Montage, the Neuromix…to hell with all that, Mum apparently thinks.
I realise that this is overdue and sometimes ironic, and even contradictory, since whenever this happens I always suggest why don’t they just unplug me altogether, and now that it almost happened…sigh. A lot of the problems with the bandwidth and internet are all down to me. I feel a lot more suited for the US with my own internet, not sharing an internet with the family business that wouldn’t thrive without it.
Gah…this is just insane. I’m going outside to reflect on how much of a bad person I am.
I guess I should start by not using any of the cool stuff like Digg, Steam or Pirate Bay.

Nihilism + Money Doesn’t Seem Important
August 6th, 2008You know, I haven’t ranted in a while, but right now I feel like I have a good reason to; Dad and I have been talking about companies monopolizing things, which in turn lead to discussion of our impending CO2 doom, and politics. Here goes.
So today I asked Dad why Australia still uses bandwidth caps, because I’m a little sore about always having to conserve bandwidth all the time. Basically (and this is Dad’s opinion) it’s all down to greed, and people wanting more money. Because our government is designed so that there are only a few major businesses controlling things. Case in point, Telstra’s Bigpond (I doubt too many people have ever heard of the other one called Internode or whatever) and the Gunns industry. Especially Gunns, since one of the big topics of conversation here in Tas is the construction of a pulp mill. Earth as we all know is slowly heating up due to global warming, and the pulp mill is only going to worsen matters. Hell! Gunns doesn’t care, as long as they get some more moolah which is essentially pointless.
Most governments, essentially the western ones (and us included) are built on idiots. The problem is that our planet is going to heck in a handbasket, and the people in charge don’t necessarily care. They just want to capitalise on whatever’s presented to get more money.
Prime example: the melting of so-called ‘permanently frozen’ terrain. Areas like tundra, that sort of thing. Now, while that’s kind of expected of the whole global warming thing, it appears that underneath all this ice and such, is a gigantic gas bubble of CO2. Now I’m sure gas bubbles in ice isn’t too peculiar, but I was told that if the bubble was exposed to the world and its contents leaked out, the carbon levels are most likely going to double, ensuring that the extinction of the human race (and most else) will only occur that much quicker! And you know what major companies, the governments, etc. want to do about it? They want to open it right up to oil mining, etc.! This is seriously one of the stupidest things I’ve heard from a group before. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t let these people capitalise on OUR DEATH.
We might not be scientists, but you don’t need to be to realise that global warming is a serious issue, as I’m sure you’ve heard it said a lot. But for people just to forget this in what could possibly become one of our toughest few years yet.
Here’s another example of human greed; the Cold War, the big weapons race between three big powers. These people spent millions just to ensure that they would be seen as the number one superpower in the world! The money could have been spent in much better ways: research into disease, cancer, et-cetera. A lot of people in power are complete idiots, as I will re-iterate once again. I’m just really shocked to see that our own people, the companies, the political systems that we thought would help us, are probably going to kill us all just because they want to make a little extra money.
Which brings me to my own opinion; just what is the deal with money? We hold these small pieces of metal and paper to have a significant purpose, yet if we were truly careful about things, we wouldn’t even need it. I would venture a guess that currency is the sole creator of burglars, thieves, etc.
Sigh…
I guess I’m just not feeling very happy at the world in general. I’m sorry for making you read through all this gibberish, but as essentially a Green supporter, I was just a little mad at how our world is operating at the moment. I’d like to say that things should get better from here, but things usually get worse before they get better, and well…humanity are idiots.
